Learning Festivals Across Wales - the early results
Adult Learners' Week 20 - 26 May 2006.
22 festivals all round Wales

A big thank you for your support!
Adult Learners' Week is now over and all your planning and hard work seems to have paid off. Thousands of people all over Wales took part in our national learning festival. Adult Learners' Week is one of the most popular initiatives in the learning calendar. Last year over 14,000 people took part - in just one week - and this year we have already registered 8,390 new learners, from just 21 evaluations received! So we are really on our way to another hugely successful campaign.

We already have some fantastic results from three of the 22 Learning Festivals so far:

Festival

Learners

Cardiff Learning Festival

2,758

Swansea Learning Festival

2,500

RCT Learning Festival

1,125

On behalf of the many thousands of people who have been given the chance to take their first steps back into learning and have discovered how enriching learning can be... a big, big thank you!

Without your evaluation we have no proof these campaigns are working.
And with no proof we have no funding!

Don't forget... if you haven't sent in your evaluation yet, you have until 30 June to do so. We can't emphasise enough how vitally important it is for you to send us your evaluation figures. The results we receive from you help us to prove just how successful these campaigns are. Put simply, our funding and the future of these campaigns depends on it. So please, please send us your forms!

Learning @ Work Day - A brief review
Learning @ Work Day: Thursday 25 May

What was Learning @ Work Day?
This was a dedicated day which provided employers and employees the opportunity to learn something new.

During the day employers were encouraged to provide staff with the opportunity to learn something new, through a series of taster sessions, workshops or even job swaps - really whatever was appropriate to organisations and their goals!

The objective of the day was to demonstrate to both employers and employees how worthwhile learning can be for general morale, resulting in better business practice.

What happened for Learning @ Work Day 2006?
A number of Welsh businesses signed up to take part in Learning @ Work Day 2006. The events that took place were all different, but all provided a platform for staff to appreciate the value of learning.

  • Legal and General prepared a day filled with events relating to helping staff stay healthy through organised Yoga, Tai Chi and Indian head massage classes and discussions led by Fitness First and Heart Start.

  • HSBC in conjunction with Brecon Jazz Festival, organised a Jazz workshop at the Sherman Theatre. All staff, whatever their musical ability, were invited to take part and the day culminated in a group performance.

  • Admiral utilised the day to encourage staff to enjoy the learning experience both at home and in the office. To achieve this, the company provided staff with a series of taster sessions to demonstrate how interesting and rewarding improving their skills could be. Amongst the sessions on offer were subjects such as Foreign Languages, Tai Chi, First Aid and Sign Language.

Tina Davies: Learner of the Year

To mark the 21st anniversary of NIACE Dysgu Cymru, we introduced a very special award category at this year's Inspire Awards. For the first time ever, we announced an overall Learner of the Year Award winner.

Tina Davies, already a category winner in the Community Learning Award, was chosen as the overall winner by an independent panel consisting of BBC Wales' broadcaster and teacher Phil Steele; John Gates of the Adult Learners Network; Aled Blake, Education Correspondent for the Western Mail, and Moira Sharkey, Education Correspondent for the South Wales Echo.

Tina's determination wins over the judges
Tina struggled to get on when she was younger, but her hard work and determination in returning to adult learning really impressed the judges.

After leaving school with no qualifications, low self esteem and becoming a young parent, Tina then experienced serious health problems, which led to long-term unemployment. Tina said: “I became a very isolated person".

Tina then followed a course that was to change her life. She trained as a volunteer play worker at Ty Fforest, completed courses in committee skills, keeping accounts and team building, gained certificates in Introduction to Youth Work, Food Hygiene, First Aid and Play Training. She then advanced to Training as an IT Tutor, has just gained her 2 year NVQ Level 3 in Child Care and sits on the Management Committee of the Community House. In the future Tina hopes to run her own childcare facility.

"I've achieved things I never thought possible."
Tina said: “As my children grew up I got very embarrassed at my lack of education, so I was given the chance I thought I would never get, to better myself and gain qualifications".

Tina's mentor at Ty Fforest Community House and award nominator, Amy Sanders, said: “Now Tina is a different person. Her training has given her the confidence she needs to jointly manage the Community House and she is also the co-ordinator of the after school club and playschemes. Her training has revealed how talented she is at working with children. Tina gives so much to her community and asks nothing in return. Tina is not driven by self-interest. Her motivation is to change her community and she is fighting against the social deprivation in her area by using her newly achieved qualifications”.

Tina said: “I now have a whole new circle of friends that have helped me tremendously. I am able to achieve things I never thought possible".

Evaluating Adult Learners' Week 2006
Evaluation is essential

Without evaluation, we cannot secure future funding for our campaigns.
We need your help to prove the success of Adult Learners' Week. Evaluation is the life-blood for all our campaigns. Without comprehensive monitoring and hard facts and figures, we cannot prove that campaigns like Adult Learners' Week are successful and that makes it extremely difficult to secure funding and ongoing public and political support.

As we are sure you are aware, this funding relies upon the statistics we gather from each campaign.

We would be grateful if you could help us with this by returning as soon as possible:

  • The participants' Consent Forms that were collected at your Adult Learners' Week events (either ours or ones that you have made yourself)

  • A Providers Evaluation Form filled in with all your event information.

The relevant documents can be found on our website

Learning Promotion Grant winners must do this as part of the conditions of their grant award. It is not compulsory for anybody else to send an Evaluation Report but it is essential that we build a true and complete picture of events right across Wales. We can only do this with your help.

Don't forget your learners can win £200!
The introduction of our free prize draw has been very successful in attracting learners to previous events and has enhanced the information compiled as part of our essential evaluation process.

The Consent Form Cheque includes all the usual questions we ask learners in order to gather the information we require to assess the effectiveness of our campaigns. But with an extra financial carrot!!!

To encourage your learners to fill in the Consent Form Cheque, there is also the chance to win £200! So get all your forms sent back to us as soon as possible !

How evaluation could win your organisation a £1,000 grant
Get your Consent Forms to us by June 30th 2006 and you could be awarded a £1,000 Learning Promotion Grant !

If you are the provider who sends us the most Consent Form Cheques by 30 June you will be awarded a Learning Promotion Grant worth £1,000 to be used during the forthcoming 'Sign Up Season' Campaign this August and September.

So it really is worth your while to get them back to us ASAP.

We will also be commissioning a telephone survey to find out who went along to the events during Adult Learners' Week and what they did as a result!

Apply for a Learning Promotion Grant for the Sign Up Season Campaign

The Learning Promotion Grants are intended to stimulate an interesting and varied programme of learning events across Wales.

Funds are available to support promotional or marketing activities or to deliver short bite-size taster sessions and enrolment events. Funds will be targeted at organisations that are working with communities who are currently not accessing learning opportunities.

A limited number of grants of up to £1,000 are available. If you are successful, your grant will be paid in two parts - 50% in advance and 50% upon completion of a final report.

We look for activities which are different, possibly located at unusual venues, able to reach new audiences, and have the potential to gain media interest.

For Sign Up Season Success, sign up to our ready-made themes!

Where possible your activity should link to either the key themes or the sub themes, which are being promoted under the banner of Sign Up Season 2006, listed below.

Projects which focus on more and different learners are also prioritised.

  • Welsh for Adults - to support the Welsh in a Week initiative

  • Basic Skills - to support literacy, numeracy, media literacy or computer skills

  • Older learners - to support the delivery and development of the curriculum to encourage participation from older people

  • Learning and Health - to support the Welsh Assembly Government's initiative 'Health Challenge Wales'

  • Workplace Learning

Complete the application form, and return it to us by 28 July.

We want to recognise the commitment and excellence of adult mentors and tutors in Wales as part of the Sign Up Season campaign.

Everyone who enters will receive a certificate of nomination. In addition to the main awards there will be a special learndirect award for e-mentors/tutors.

Award winners will be presented at a national award ceremony and may be featured in press, television and radio. Learners are urged to nominate their tutors and mentors, while family, friends and colleagues can also make nominations.

The Inspire Adult Mentor and Tutor Awards are open to people who have been involved in adult learning provision in Wales for at least three years.

Nominations are invited from ALL sectors of adult learning provision - statutory or voluntary, formal or informal, training or education and different modes of study including distance learning. Nominations for full-time and part-time mentors/tutors are welcome.

Does someone you know deserve special recognition?

  • Are active in more than one learning situation.

  • Have overcome particular personal circumstances and/or are working in particularly difficult circumstances.

  • Have inspired learners to progress onto other courses or opportunities to learn.

  • Have developed innovative ways of supporting learners online.

  • Have succeeded in creating a successful online learning community.

You can nominate a mentor or tutor if you are a learner, a provider or employer/work colleague, another tutor or a member of the community.
