Learners' Green Day It's not too late to get involved!
In conjunction with the Workers' Educational Association, Community Learning Wales and the Open College Network, NIACE Dysgu Cymru are planning to coordinate the Learners Green Day during Adult Learners' Week. This is an exciting new opportunity to generate more interest in learning and environmental projects throughout your local community. Global concerns about our environment have been hitting the headlines recently. But what is happening at a local level? How is our environment being threatened? What can local people do to help improve the areas where they live?
Learners' Green Day will give local people the chance to do something really worthwhile for the environment and learn new and interesting things along the way.
To help with this we are making available our Learning Promotion Grant Scheme to support innovative promotional activity.
Forms can be downloaded from www.alweek.org.uk The closing date has been extended to the 9th March.
We will be talking to Community Groups and Learning providers across Wales with the intention of matching them with environmental organisations to work on a project in their area, that will benefit the community as a whole. A project could be anything, but a few suggestions could be:
Clean up a bit of waste land and make it wildlife friendly
To inspire you, here are a few examples of Environmental activities that have happened in previous Adult Learners Weeks.
Caerphilly Biodiversity (May 2003) The 'Go Wild' launch of the Biodiversity Action Plan took place to promote the importance of local wildlife via The Global Biodiversity Perspective that was covered through Brazilian rainforest music, Indian dance and an exhibition of work by schools. It is estimated that over 3000 people attended the events.
Bangor Forest Garden Learner Open Day (Sept 2005) A range of tasters were based around the many activities that could be run on the site including: Growing Herbs, Pottery, Guided Walks, Willow Weaving, Permaculture, Forest Gardening and Greenwood Working. The local community was targeted along with the homeless and disadvantaged communities.
Learning @ Work Day It's not too late for your business to reap the benefits
National Learning @ Work Day (L@W Day) takes place this year on Thursday 24 May. It's an annual awareness campaign encouraging businesses to take part in a special fun day of bite-sized learning events. Companies across Wales will be organising learning taster sessions during the working day for their staff and activities could be anything from juggling to IT, and from yoga to languages! Learning in the workplace has been proven to motivate and inspire employees, enhance team spirit and ultimately improve productivity. So it really will pay your organisation to get involved!
