Taking Control awareness hits peak amongst learners.
Are you taking advantage of our campaign?

For the last two weeks we have been heavily promoting our Taking Control learning initiative with a national campaign. Now that the advertising activity has peaked and appeared in newspapers and on television across the country, awareness for Taking Control is at its highest point in the entire campaign.

Still nearly two weeks to go

Our supplements have reached over one million readers around Wales and our TV campaign has been one of the most successful ever, beating our initial target for audience figures. In fact, there has never been a better time to get behind our learning initiative. Taking Control doesn't officially end until 27 January, which gives you nearly two weeks to take advantage of Taking Control while it's still fresh in the minds of potential new learners.

Please get behind Taking Control

This is a crucial time for the campaign. A time when we rely on our partners and providers to make the most of our investment in advertising and really get behind Taking Control on the ground. Much can be achieved before the campaign ends, so please help us to make this our most successful New Year learning campaign ever by:

  • Spreading the word and telling all your learners about Taking Control

  • Making sure your posters are being displayed and replacing those that are damaged. Run out of posters? No problem - order some more!

  • Getting behind the campaign for one final push before 27 January

In this eZine we round up the campaign, reporting on our activity, reminding you of what appeared and when, and giving you all the information you need to help us make Taking Control even more successful.

Helping us to secure funds for next year
We need your evaluation forms to prove the success of Taking Control

But one of the most important ways in which you can help us is to make sure that you get your Consent Cheque forms completed and sent to us as soon as possible. It's the best way that we can track the success of the campaign and secure funding for next year. So please make time to help us evaluate how effective our campaign has been.

Celebrity Big Brother, Emmerdale & The Bill
Peak time spots for our TV commercials

For the last two weeks we have been heavily promoting our Taking Control learning initiative on television with a series of powerful 60 second commercials featuring real-life learners who have transformed their lives through learning. The TV campaign has been one of our most successful ever and we are delighted to announce that the campaign has exceeded our targeted audience figures.

Making our TV budget work harder

Our commercials have been on air from 3 January and appeared in many peak-viewing programmes. We secured spots between episodes of Celebrity Big Brother, for example and in the commercial breaks during News At Ten. Our success in securing a schedule with so many peak time spots has helped us maximise our investment in TV advertising, making our budget work harder and helping us to reach even more potential new learners. View our schedule and see where and when our commercials appeared.

Inspirational learning stories captivate our viewers

Our series of 60 second commercials were timed to coincide with everyone's New Year's resolutions and they seemed to really captivate our viewers. We have had many calls from learners, providers and partners complimenting us on how powerful the commercials were. We were helped, of course, by having such fantastic learning successes to film. All the learners who appeared on our commercials had particularly inspirational stories to tell about their lives.

Our four learning stars were:

  • Davey, who at 99 years young still has a yearning to learn something new everyday

  • Emma, who failed her exams at school but still became the manager of a top retail store at just 19

  • Nigel, who battled drug addiction and homelessness and put his life back on track, thanks to learning

  • And Vanessa, who hit a crossroads in her life and went back to learning to find a job that really fulfilled her

All these learners gave up their valuable time to appear in front of camera to help us to encourage others to start their learning journeys, so on behalf of everyone associated with the campaign we would like to say a big thank you!

Starring Roy Noble

Many thanks must also go to Radio and TV personality Roy Noble who appeared in the commercials for us. Roy has become a champion of NIACE Dysgu Cymru and as a former head teacher fully appreciates the power of learning and is an avid supporter of our campaigns.

Massive newspaper supplement campaign
Reaches over 1,288,000 readers!

To support the Taking Control promotion we undertook a national campaign of newspaper supplements across Wales. The supplements included important information about events and featured inspiring stories of how people have transformed their lives through learning.

Thanks for your help

It was a big task to compile all the information for these supplements and we couldn't have achieved everything without the help of all our colleagues in the learning sector who supplied us with vital information.

So, we would like to say a big thank you to all those who contributed and especially to our learners who gave up valuable time to be interviewed.

The readership figures are still being compiled but the combined readership of all the supplements is expected to break the million barrier - topping an expected 1,288,000!

Here is a review of the schedule showing the list of newspapers in which our supplements appeared. You will notice that the campaign is not quite finished with a final supplement due to appear in Golwg on 22 January. So keep your eye out for it.

Give the campaign one final push
Check your posters and replace the damaged ones

Hopefully your posters have been up for a couple of weeks, so they may be looking a little tired. If that's the case, maybe you could help the campaign by replacing them with new copies to give the campaign fresh impetus at this crucial time.

It's not too late to reorder new copies

If you have run out of posters, don't worry. It's not too late to reorder new copies. You can order printed copies or download PDF versions.

Choose from A2, A3 and A4 sizes

Take control of your promotion with these free posters. There are 20 to choose from and so many variations of themes and messages that you are bound to find something to suit your requirements perfectly.

There are posters aimed at all ages of learners and covering such subjects as:

  • How to take control of your finances after the spending excesses of Christmas

  • How to feel healthier and happier through learning

  • How to make the most of your free time, whatever your age

  • How to get the skills to earn more

  • How to get on at work and find a job you really enjoy

  • How to make 2006 your year, the year you make it happen

Space for you to personalise each poster

We have designed each poster with a blank area for you to include your own call to action. The PDFs have been formatted to make it easy for you to type in your own marketing message, in order to promote an open day for example, or to encourage learners to contact you for advice and information.

How you use the posters is entirely up to you, but please do make sure you use them. They have been printed to help you make this Taking Control campaign a success for your organisation.

Order your posters

The posters are now available and you can order your copies by emailing john.hill@niacedc.org.uk

Or download PDFs

Alternatively, these posters are available right now for you to download, below.

Evaluation is Key!
Please get your Consent Form Cheques returned ASAP

Don't forget your learners can win £200!

The introduction of our free prize draw has been designed to attract learners to your Taking Control events and to enhance the information compiled as part of our essential evaluation process.

We have printed a consent form which includes all the usual questions we ask learners in order to gather the information we require to assess the effectiveness of our campaigns.

To encourage your learners to fill in the consent form, we give them the chance to win £200!

A cheque that doubles up as a consent form

Every form also includes a 'cheque' for £200. Simply encourage your learners to fill in the 'cheque' with their name and address, with the rest of the form, and bring it with them when they attend your event.

Once you have collated all the completed forms, send them to us as soon as possible. Every completed form and cheque will go into the hat for the chance to win a real cheque for £200.

Steve from Newport wins £200 in our first consent cheque draw

As we reported in a previous eZine, the winner of our £200 Consent Form prize for the September Sign Up Season campaign was Steve Griffiths from Newport, who attended the Usk Show.

This time it could be one of your learners!

There could be £1,000 in it for you, as well.

The provider who returns the most Consent Form Cheques can win a £1,000 Learning Promotion Grant, to be used during Adult Learners' Week in May.

The Consent Form Cheque was promoted in the nationwide newspaper supplement campaign we orchestrated as part of the Taking Control marketing, but not every learner will either see the promotion or remember to bring it along to the event.

So download the Consent Form Cheque or contact Steve Johnson on 029 2037 0900 to order printed copies. Then please make sure that you distribute them to learners at your events.

Get your forms to us by 17 February 2006 and you could be awarded a £1,000 Learning Promotion Grant

Please have the Consent Form Cheques available at your events and return as many as possible to us by 17 February 2006. We will then commission a telephone survey to find out who went along to the events during the Taking Control campaign and what they did as a result!

The learning provider returning the most completed Consent Form Cheques will be eligible for a £1,000 Learning Promotion Grant to be used during the Adult Learners' Week campaign in May 2006.

£1,000 to the Vale Learning Network
Their reward for sending in the most Consent Form Cheques

The Vale Learning Network was our champion "Consent form returner" for the Sign Up Season. They sent back no less than 335 forms and earned themselves a £1,000 Learning Promotion Grant for the Taking Control campaign!

Now it's your turn to get £1,000 for Adult Learners' Week in May.
Get those consent forms back to us.

A great way to evaluate the campaign's effectiveness.

As always the evaluation process will be absolutely essential. We need to assess the effectiveness of all our campaigns to ensure that the money and resources we invest in marketing and project management are well spent.

Please help us by making sure that all the Consent Form Cheques are sent back to us, and don't forget to put your own evaluation procedures in place. Our funding for future campaigns depends on how well we monitor the results of our marketing efforts, so please play your part by sending us the vital data we need.

Please make time to evaluate

Please, please don't forget to set up a system for evaluating the outcomes! A simple system for recording how many people come through the door or pick up information is needed. Your event should provide a fresh database of contacts to follow up with more information about courses or bite-size tasters.

Please use the evaluation forms

It is vital that we know how your events went! We have two evaluation forms - one is for your feedback on your event, the second is the Consent Form Cheque for the participants at your event. Download both forms now.

Taking Control campaign debated on Radio
Nicola Heywood Thomas discusses learning on BBC Wales

We were delighted to be invited by Nicola Heywood Thomas to come into her studio and contribute to a live radio debate on New Year resolutions. Essex Havard, our Regional Development Officer, appeared on Nicola's show to discuss how learning something new can be a great way keep the promises we make to ourselves at this time of year. Learning has been proved to improve your sense of health and well-being and make you feel generally more happy about your life and the Taking Control TV campaign was timed to go on air just after Christmas, just as we all contemplated our New Year Resolutions. So the opportunity to appear live on Radio Wales was an added bonus. Thank you Nicola, for your support!

You can listen to Essex's discussion online.

Another chance to listen to our veteran learner Davey on the radio:

One of the learners featured in our Taking Control TV commercials, Davey Jones, must being getting used to being a media star. Davey, now aged 99, also appeared on a Radio Wales programme back in May 2004 called 'Mousemat' to talk about his IT learning experiences as a 'silver surfer'.

We have retrieved the programme from the archives and you can listen to Davey's interview online.
