Adult Learners' Week 2006
The week 14,000 learners try their hand at something new!

May 20th to 26th

Planning is well underway for our annual national festival of bite-size learning in May. Over the 15 years that Adult Learners' Week has taken place, this learning bonanza has grown and grown... and grown! Last year no less than 14,000 people all over Wales took part and this year we aim to beat that figure again. With your help, we can achieve our aim and bring the joy of learning into the lives of even more people up and down the country.

By taking part and supporting Adult Learners' Week you can help to:

  • Promote participation in learning

  • Increase access to information, advice and guidance

A great opportunity for you

Adult Learners' Week is a great opportunity for learning providers! A national marketing campaign is orchestrated by NIACE Dysgu Cymru to help build awareness of the festival. Learners all over Wales will be inspired and ready to get involved again this year, so make sure you are part of the action. Start planning your programme of “bite-size” tasters now and give learners in your community the chance to have a go. To help you we have compiled a list of key themes popular with learners, and proven to help make learning more accessible for all. Base your event around one of these themes and you're sure to have a very successful festival!

Focus days during Adult Learners' Week
Cultural Diversity Day: Saturday 20 May,

Britain has benefited from ethnic diversity throughout its history. From industry and commerce to art and dance, from sport and music to science and literature, the activities of individuals and groups from ethnic minorities have enriched life in Britain for all. (For more information see the Commission for Racial Equality website.)

Cultural Diversity Day was introduced in 2002 to start addressing some elements of the equality and diversity agendas. It has since become integrated into Adult Learners' Week in May, and enriched and enhanced the festival of learning.

This year Cultural Diversity Day takes place on 20 May.

With the support of our Providers, we will:

  • Raise awareness and understanding between different cultures
  • Celebrate the similarities and differences between cultures
  • Encourage community cohesion
  • Support and promote activities and events celebrating diversity
  • Raise policy makers' awareness of concerns and issues around barriers to learning

"Cultural diversity provides an opportunity for everyone to come together and share ideas and good practice. So much good practice in the field of challenging racism and promoting cultural diversity through adult education goes unnoticed. Cultural Diversity Day provides an opportunity for you to showcase what you are doing in this area and for other providers to learn from your experiences. It also provides an opportunity for you to encourage learners from minority groups to take advantage of your services."
Lenford White, Development Officer, NIACE.

Learning Festivals
Festivals taking place the length and breadth of Wales as part of Adult Learners' Week

One of the most pleasing aspects of Adult Learners' Week has been the introduction of the many local and community festivals that have been planned as part of the national campaign. We have been delighted at just how many of our partners have offered to support Adult Learners' Week by organising festivals on their own patch. We really do appreciate that these take a great deal of time to bring together but we are convinced that all the organisers will be rewarded for their efforts with lively, colourful, vibrant well attended events.

We have listed the many festivals taking place below. If you would like to offer your support in any way or have any ideas which could help the organisers then please do get in touch.

Free posters to promote your event
Order your copies now

Every year we support our partners and providers taking part in Adult Learners' Week by supplying a range of marketing materials to be used free to promote their events.

This year's Adult Learners' Week campaign brings with it our most visually striking set of promotional posters yet. Each poster shows a pair of hands taking part in an activity, with the tagline 'Try your hand at something new'. We think you'll find them extremely effective for promoting your short courses and taster sessions throughout Adult Learners' Week.

Choose from A2, A3 and A4 sizes

As usual, all posters are bilingual (English on one side, Welsh on the other) and come in the following sizes:

A4 - 21cm x 30cm (8.25" x 11.75")
A3 - 30cm x 42cm (11.75" x 16.5")
A2 - 42cm x 60cm (16.5" x 23.5")

Remember: All posters are completely free. If you have ordered posters from us already and they're looking a bit tired, just order some more!

Space for you to personalise each poster

We have designed each poster with a blank area for you to include your own call to action. The PDFs have been formatted to make it easy for you to type in your own marketing message, in order to promote an open day for example, or to encourage learners to contact you for advice and information.

How you use the posters is entirely up to you, but please do make sure you use them. They have been printed to help you make this Adult Learners' Week festival a success for your organisation.

Order your posters

Ordering is easy. Each design has an order code on our website. Simply send an email to john.hill@niacedc.org.uk quoting the order codes, sizes and quantity of the posters you want.

Or download PDFs

Alternatively, these posters are available right now for you to download, below.

Please send your completed evaluation forms to us ASAP
And don't forget your Consent Form Cheques

We need to know that Taking Control was a success

Judging by the evaluation forms we have received so far, and considering the positive feedback we have had from partners and providers, we believe the 'Taking Control' campaign in January was a success.

But we need more evauations in order to finalise the campaign and secure funding for next year, so please, please get your evaluation forms to us. Evaluation is the life-blood for campaigns such as this and without comprehensive monitoring and hard facts and figures, we will not be able to continue our campaigns. So get them to us ASAP!

Don't forget your learners can win £200!

The introduction of our free prize draw was designed to attract learners to your Taking Control events and to enhance the information compiled as part of our essential evaluation process.

The Consent Form Cheque includes all the usual questions we ask learners in order to gather the information we require to assess the effectiveness of our campaigns.

To encourage your learners to fill in the Consent Form Cheque, there was the chance to win £200!

There could be £1,000 in it for you, as well

Get your forms to us by 26th February 2006 and you could be awarded a £1,000 Learning Promotion Grant

If you are the Provider who sends us the most Consent Form Cheques by 26th February you will be awarded a Learning Promotion Grant worth £1,000 to be used during the Adult Learners' Week campaign in May 2006.

So it really is worth your while to get them back to us ASAP.

We will also be commissioning a telephone survey to find out who went along to the events during the Taking Control campaign and what they did as a result!

Were you awarded a Learning Promotion Grant for use during the Taking Control campaign?

No invoice, no evaluation. No money!

To ensure prompt payment of the grant, please return your evaluation forms, along with your invoice(s) as soon as possible
